HIGHLIGHTS: The central government may soon provide the facility of recharging the Fastag in vehicles through cash.

The central government may soon provide the facility of recharging the Fastag in vehicles through cash. Electronic toll collection (ETC) has increased sharply since December 15, after Fastag was mandated. Now the government is going to start a new facility to provide more options to recharge it.

Over 40% traffic in Hybrid Lane

The Ministry of Road Transport had decided to keep 25 per cent of the lanes hybrid at all toll plazas till 15 January. The aim was to give people time to ease movement and fasten. According to the ministry's data, more than 40 percent of the vehicles are still using these hybrid lanes. The toll can be paid both in cash and electronic mode in the hybrid lane. An official aware of the case says that Fastag can be recharged through cash at toll booths or other locations. Apart from this, cash recharge facility will also be available at the booths being constructed by the government.

60 percent toll tax coming through Fastag

An official aware of the matter says that currently around 60 per cent toll tax is being collected through Fastag. According to the official, a sharp increase in toll tax collection was observed electronically for three weeks after the FASTAG was made mandatory, which has now stopped.

Only one Hybrid Lane since yesterday

The National Highway Authority of India has made electronic toll collection mandatory through Fastag from December 15 to deal with the traffic jam. Now from January 15, all toll plazas will have only one hybrid lane. According to another official, at some toll plazas, the pilgrimage is quite low. This is why people are using hybrid lanes instead of fastags. As of 9 January, 1.26 crore Fastags have been released.
